I got started with small dog training the old-fashioned way – my parents brought home two miniature schnauzers when I was a kid and I made it up as I went along. I started figuring out how to train my dogs by being persistent. Strangely enough, this came very naturally to me as a child. I would sit for hour after hour with Rufruf and Pufpuf (the names of my family’s dogs back then), going through the things I wanted them to learn.

Let’s start with crate training puppies. To begin, you must make the dog feel like the crate is a place of safety. It should be a place they really want to go! Small dog training is all about making your dog love doing the things you want your pet to do. So I began putting yummy treats inside the crate and old towels for the dogs to lie on. I would even get into the crate to play with the dogs! Once my dogs realized the crate was a fun place to hang out and play and nap, it was never a problem to get them to go into the crate!

After getting my dogs comfortable with being in the crate (and even asking to go inside the crate for naps), the next step is to begin house breaking the puppy. This is a very important step because there is nothing more annoying than having a puppy going potty inside the house. That gets very old very quickly.

Remember, the old, bad way of trying to get your dog to do his business outside is to drag him outside right after he makes a mistake and goes inside house. The better small dog training method is to take your pet out immediately after he eats or drinks. And make sure not to just pick up your pet and carry him outside. Instead, make sure to get the leash, put it on your pet, and walk him outside. This may sound tedious but you will be surprised how quickly the dog starts learning to do his potty outside.

Allowing a Yorkie to jump on you when greeting is not as intimidating to a human as it would be if a 90 pound Shepard did the same, but to a dog, this jumping is a display of dominance. By allowing the little terrier away with this you are giving them permission to be the pack leader.

Are you afraid when a Pekinese growls or barks at you? Of course not, but again, if you allow that kind of behavior you are encouraging them to establish themselves as the more dominant member of the household.

All of these little behaviors that you would not tolerate in a large animal seem to have become okay or expected in a little dog breed and that is the only reason they have gained the reputation of being cranky little beasts. If you correct their perception of where they fit in within your household, you will not see those behaviors develop and your little pet will be a joy to have as a member of your family. Your friends and family who come to visit will be much happier and so will your pet. It is a big job for the little guy to take on being a leader and protector of your family and home. Remove that stress from your pet and they will be the loving and cuddly companion you imagined.
