I have a pet problem…?

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

I just turned 15 today! (Happy Birthday to me..etc. LOL)
Anyways…when I was 14, I got a Miniature American Eskimo. He was trouble at first, but he turned into a sweet puppy…But he got ran over 2 months later..(cry)

I still have 2 cats, but that little extra animal is burning a hole in my heart…My mom is set on NEVER GETTING ANOTHER ANIMAL, but I need one!

Some advice??

I either want a toy poodle or a teacup long haired chihuahua.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. I have a 5yr. old toy poodle. He is the greatest!! He is so smart,he was easy to train, and he only barks when he hears strange noises. If you take the time with toy poodles they are so loyal to their master. They don't like to be alone alot. They are fun to groom and dressup! I would never get anything but a toy poodle. with any dog you should socialize them with people, kids, and other dogs!you should always do your research before you get any dog,to see if it fits your needs and the dogs! you have to remember chihuahua's are very territorial.they have a habit to be yappy! I love my toy poodle!!
good luck! my dog follows me everywhere,i always know where he is!

Any other dog breeds I should consider?

Monday, September 1st, 2008

I want to choose from the smallest dog breeds. Just plain small dogs, toys, or teacups.

I prefer dogs with smooth or short hair. That means little to medium grooming.

No chihuahuas!!

I've narrowed it down to these breeds so far. If you can come up with more I can consider that would be great!

beagles-standard/pocket
boston terriers
dachshunds-standards/miniature
jack russell terriers
manchester terriers
miniature pinschers
norfolk terriers
(toy) fox terriers

If you can tell me any interesting information you know about these, or new, breeds that would be good.

I've looked these dogs up. But I still want as much information as possible.

I'm concerned about knowing health issues these breeds may have.

I don't have any children so I don't need a dog that's good with kids or other pets. But a loyal watch dog type would be great.

I'm looking for a dog that likes to cuddle and show affection.

A minimal barker would be best but not too important.

Thanks for any info you can give.
long hair means grooming. that's a no.

yorkies have very long hair if you don't cut it. and yes, they do bark. they're one of the cutest darn dogs out there tho when groomed.

i heard that italian greyhounds are prone to broken bones. i looked at that breed too.

poodles of any kind are a no. they aren't my type of dog. and they need grooming. i don't want a ball of fur.

miniature schnauzers need grooming too, unless you want a fluff ball for a dog. they're really great dogs tho. i just can't put up with regular grooming.

same with west highland white terriers. it gets long and shaggy. they look nice tho. if i wanted a longer haired dog i'd consider it.

I have a Boston terrier and have always had bostons. They are very protective, loyal and shed very little. They require very little grooming. They are high energy dogs and will require daily exercise. They also have large bulging eyes that need to be protected from cats etc. If you live in an area w/ extreme heat they need to be kept indoors because of their flat noses. I love my boston :) I also have a dachsund and he is pretty good too. Some have problems with their backs though. He is also bad about going potty in the house.

Toy Aussie..?

Monday, September 1st, 2008

My friend is interested in the Toy or Miniature Aussie. I've read both good and bad things about them – the bad being that they are like the "teacup" dogs being produced and the good being that they are actually a breed or something of the sort.

Which is true? Is there such thing as a Mini Aussie or is it just a fad like the teacup chihuahua which is creating by breeding runts?
I thought they were similar to the "teacup" fad just a bit "better" in the sense that they are petitioning for AKC recognition. The one my friend saw was in a pet store so she wasn't going to go for it anyway – she was just curious (as was i.)

I'll let her read all the answers – good ones from everyone, thanks! I think she'll stick to wanted a Sheltie after she reads this. ^_^

Ok…first off…North American Shepherd, not Mini Aussie.

Toy Aussies are disgusting, poorly bred (more so than "minis") and I wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole (unless from a shelter!)

Basically a North American Shepherd (NAS) has been downsized from a "real aussie" (for you Lady I don't know your name!) by mixing in with Sheltie or breeding smaller sized dogs (not necessarily runts). The difference with these dogs is that after so many years, they begin to breed true, meaning 2 NAS can have a little of NAS, not some Aussies, some shelties, and some whatevers.

A NAS has the same qualities and attributes as a "real aussie" and is just slightly smaller. However, it is extremely hard to find a reputable breeder for NAS, my first one was from a BYB, realized that I screwed up and now I'm a fanatic researching the breed. My next dog is actually coming all the way from South Dakota and the lady has been breeding them for over 20 years and is active in showing.

One site I recommend is www.namascusa.com. It's the parent club for the breed. Please please PLEASE feel free to email me if you have any questions or your friend has any questions.

Add: the "mini aussies" have petitioned for acceptance into AKC as North American Shepherd, supposedly they are on 2 out of 3 stages. My advice is to tell your friend to go with a breeder who knows about this. These people will obviously be in it for the betterment of the breed and not in it for money.

how man animals do you have?

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Just curious…I recently added my 5th dog to my family…just wondering how many animals people have out there at 1 given time….i love dogs..I have 1 miniature pincher (she is mine, she is the queen) 1 teacup chihuahua (actually she is only a 1/4 of a dog and she is my 13 year old daughters dog) 1 mixed breed (great personality) and 1 boxer (we rescued him from an abusive home) and just recently got a 7 wk old boxer pup…(my boyfriends riding partner, he is a truckdriver) so see they all have a purpose…

I have a really chunky staffy called Rocco. He is 21 months old.

I have another dog that lives on my property but she isnt mine, I just look after her 1 month on, 1 month off. She is a husky/GSD/blue cattle dog called Tulley. There was 2 of them but 1 had to be put down, both 15 years old.

Im getting another staffy, hopefully by the end of the year. Ive already named her Maggie.

where can i find miniature FREE puppies :]?

Monday, September 1st, 2008

like teacup puppies or like chihuahuas or yorkies!!

Nowhere. Dogs are expensive to breed. They don't give away free dogs, especially not puppies. So-called "teacup" dogs are even more expensive, since the parents are often sickly since they are so small.

I'd suggest you go to your local animal shelter. Browse the dogs. You may want to come back several times before you find the right companion. They often have puppies and young dogs. You'll eventually find a young, small dog and be saving a life.

Good luck!
