How Do I Stop My Chihuahua From Chewing Bald Spots On Herself?

I Have A Chihuahua Named Ginger And She Started Chewing on Herself And Is Now Chewing Bald Spots On Herself.
How Do I Get Her To Stop?

First, get the little miss to the vet’s-she could have mange, or another issue that needs a veterinarian’s help in curing.
Second, have you treated for fleas? Could be fleabite dermatitis.
Third, are you feeding a premium kibble that doesn’t have corn, or byproducts, in it? Skin irritations and infections are often a result of food allergies, most commonly due to corn and byproducts. If you feel the need to switch her food, do it VERY slowly to prevent gastrointestinal upset.
Fourth, are you bathing her too often? Dogs should never be bathed more often than 8 weeks apart, as their skin will dry out.
Best luck!

There are several reasons for this; stress, fleas, allergies.

You need to figure out what it is with the help of your vet.

Well first go to the vet, she may have a skin condition. Skin problems are common in Chihuahuas. When my dog started chewing on herself and on furniture, I used Grannick’s Bitter Apple. Its a spray that you can spray on dogs, furniture, etc. that tastes like a sour apple and is very bitter, dogs don’t like it. My dog stopped chewing things instantly!

every time u see her do it slap your hands together and when she looks at u tell her good girl. or make a loud noise. if u can get her to do something else she will see that is more fun then chewing on her self and take her to the vet and see if something is wrong. my dog started getting some and my trainer said it was from shedding but couldnt take a close look took her to the vet she cant have fleas and was on a poor dog food and ididnt know about it. they put her on some pills and i slowly changed her food and got some front line and now u cant even see the spot when there were all up and down her legs and feet. it was bad and in a matter of a week they were better. well good luck.

Get her to the vets! It could be fleas, stress, anxiety another medical condition or even boredom.

My cockapoo does the same thing and his is skin problems. It could be that, or stress (nerves), or fleas…
If it could be fleas, there is a product called Comfortis that you give once a month with a full meal. It kills the fleas within 30 min and keeps working for a month. One flea bite can keep a dog itching all summer.
If it is skin allergies, you might want to change what you are feeding your dog. A diet free of Wheat and Corn gluten could help. Some dogs are allergic to Wheat and Corn. Pepper is on a special veterinary diet with a main protien source and a main carb…not very many fillers. Expensive but totally worth it if it works.
If it is stress, they do make anti-depression/anxiety meds for dogs and cats. I know because one of our cats had a nervous breakdown and we had to have him put temporarily on medication.
I hope this info helped and that your baby is feeling better soon!!!

Your dog is likely suffering from either allergies or parasites. If she has fleas, you should treat them with Frontline or Advantage. First, look at her food and treats. Many dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, and soy. If these are in your dogs food, find a food that does not contain them. If you feed her human foods, make sure they are free from these as well.
If these things don’t fix the problem, you should take your pup to the vet.

You need to take her to the vet and get a diagnosis of what is going on. She may have an allergy, fleas or sarcoptic mange (scabies).

If she has scabies the vet will treat her accordingly. If she is diagnosed with food allegies then you may want to put her on a premium quality food like Wellness or Canidae. Or if you are ambitious you can get her on a raw diet (there are many websites and books available regarding how to do this, just do a google search). Beware of cortisone shots (too many side effects).

Improving her food will also help with fleas, since parasites don’t attack healthier animals as much as those with weakened immune systems.

Also, if she has allergies you can give her some relief by making an oatmeal bath for her. Put some oatmeal in a thin sock and then put it into a shallow, warm bath. Let her sit in the bath and hold the sock on her spots to relieve her itching. This is good for people itching, too!

Good luck. Remember to take her to the vet!
