Is it safe to buy a puppy online?

Hi I want to get a puppy most likely a Chihuahua and I want to know if it’s ok to buy a puppy safely online? I know not to get one at a pet store and the local shelters never have a chi puppy. What should I do?

Here is a site I was looking at: Do you think this is legit?

http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/dogs/sale/1100072/

Has anyone ever bought a puppy online that worked out fine?

You can surely use the web to search for good breeders living near you. Don't ever have a pup shipped to you… First, any breeder that will ship a pup doesn't care about the well-being and health of their pups. Second, if they are a good breeder, people will come to them, they will have no need to ship pups out.

There are many things to look for when trying to find a good breeder:
* they wont let their pups go until, at least, 8 weeks of age
* everything will be on paper with signatures (deposits, health guarantees, sales contracts)
* they will screen you, not accept just anyone that wants to buy one of their pups. they should have a potential owner questionnaire for you to fill out and even go as far as visiting your home
* they should have guarantees from you that they will want in their contract… like, you will guarantee to bring the pup back to them if, for any reason, you couldn't take care of it anymore, no matter what age AND that you will keep the pup indoors, etc…
* the pups will have a health guarantee of some sort
* you should be able to contact their vet with any questions about their male and female and when the pups have been seen
* they should know everything about their breed and be able to answer any questions. they should tell you the good AND the bad about their breed… they shouldn't sugar coat everything
* you should be able to see and visit the pup at their place right in the environment they are living in and also, see and pet the mom and dad

I know there is so much more. Research and Good Luck!

    NO!!!!!!

Always buy from a breeder who is recommended by the breed council. Ensure you can see the Mother with the litter and the Sire if possible.

Well, it comes right out and says they do not screen the breeders. Sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Most responsible reputable breeders don't sell puppies on the net, but if that breeder has references and a statement from their vet on their website saying they are responsible and clean breeders.
EDIT: Also when it comes to buying a puppy of the net you have to ship the puppy which is very unnecessary and puts stress on the puppy, when you can just adopt or try to find a chi rescue near you.

No responsible breeder would sell a puppy to someone they've never met! Chihuahuas are the "must have" breed at the moment and every backyard breeder is churning out puppies as fast as they can! To be sure of buying a healthy pure bred Chihuhua, go via the breed club who can tell you where your nearest reputable breeder is.

Most importantly – remember there is no such thing as a Teacup Chihuahua – all Chis should weigh less than 6 lbs. Any breeder advertising "Teacups" should be avoided like the plague.

I purchased "online" but from a breeder. ANY site like "next day pets" is absolutely NOT the place to buy a puppy/dog from… or any pet for that matter.

EDIT: After looking at the listings on there I say go to a breeder-the same price, actually breeders (REPUTABLE breeders who do proper genetic testing, have excellent pedigrees on the parents, etc) may cost LESS than the poor little dogs on the site you listed. It really bothered me the dogs available-"Tcups", 7 week 3 day old puppies… that is SUCH a red flag of millers or BYBs. Please don't support the sellers on that site, but go through someone whos goal is the betterment of the breed, informing their potential buyers, and can provide you with the info necessary to know they are in fact a legit breeder. One thing I did when we were looking for the breeder was we found their "kennel name" and then looked at dog show registries (local to where the breeder lived). Then we found the breed the breeder produced and found their kennel name listed at a LOT of shows. The breeder we used also had their dogs and b*tches listed as dogs used for breeding by other GOOD breeders-that is another thing to look for…

Good luck. But ultimately, if you "just want" a companion, go through pet finder and try to save a dog from a kill shelter or adopt through a rescue or no kill shelter. :)

that site is full of back yard breeders and puppy millers.

No, its not safe. You will get a poor quality puppy that has health issues. The puppy you see pictured may not even be the pup you recieve.. I have often heard of that happening!

If you want a Chi, then go to http://www.akc.org and look for the breed's parent club. Get a referral to a reputable breeder.

You can also try http://www.petfinder.com to look for one in a rescue.

Most dogs bought online come from the same puppymills that suppy pet stores.

Check with Good breeders, and keep checking rescues in your area, you can also search in the classifieds and in the shelters listed on petfinder.com

Best is to buy from a local reputable breeder.

However, If you do your homework, andn ask the right questions, certainly you can buy online.

I recently looked for several months, knowing exactly what I wanted, but could not find what I wanted, within 300 miles. I found the dog I wanted online. I spent $2,100.00 for the dog I wanted, and feel like I got a great deal, and an awsome dog.

    Best of Luck!

Looks to me like an on line pet store that allows individuals to place puppy adds on their site. So each add is a separate entity and would have to be researched individually.
What I would look for on an individuals web site is what percentage of the site is devoted to selling puppies and what percentage is devoted to what else they do with their dog besides breeding. If all they do is sell puppies I know I wouldn't be interested.
There are specialty sites around that accept adds from individuals, but I would sure find out what their policies were before using one.
For instance I wouldn't hesitate for a second to look for a pup on this site,
    http://www.working-retriever.com/retriever-trials/
But then again each individual add is a separate entity, but at least you can be assured that the dog have health certifications because they won't accept the add unless they are.
