Yesterday, called and called many animal shelters looking for a small dog, that didn't shed, preferably something with poodle or maltese in it. Went to a country store, they had dogs from an animal shelter there; was very close to getting something there, but was already sold. ![]()
Kept calling "dog breeders". Mom was intersted in chihuahuas, even though shed and hyperactive. Came across "breeder" that had chihuahuas. Got directions, went to see them.
All the chihuahuas interested in= not for sale. Were interested in AffenPinscher/ Chihuahua mix or "mutt" as you all call it. Nickname= Affenhuahua. Cute and hyperactive. Had fleas on it. "Breeder" didn't realize it. She said she'd take care of it.
Area dogs bred were in: cluttered garage. One small walkway with about 20 cages stacked on top one another. Most cages had 1 dog in it each, except for dogs with babies, mates, or siblings. Max # of dogs occuping cage: 2. "Breeder" showed us parents of "Affenhuahua" puppies.
not quite a puppy mill. Could be beginnings of one. She said she did not believe in "inbreeding the dogs". but she also said she doesn't do it for money. Said affenhuahuas didn't shed…but mom said that they did. That would explain the clump of hair that was left on my shirt after I held one. They smelled trrible. I feel sorry for them. But all she's going to do is keep breeding them even if I don't buy one. We told her we'd think about it.
We're having someone go around all the animal shelters in and around our state to see if we find a dog that fits our standards. She said if we gave her specific details, she could find us one in two days. If not, we'll take interst in the affenhuahuas or we'll find a better "breeder" that has full-bred maltis or poodles or even a malti-poo mutt. Need your opinion?
( I added details, so if you need to edit, I suggest you do so)
Well, I have affenpinschers and I highly recommend finding an accredited breeder and getting a purebred puppy from a reliable kennel.
Not only would such a puppy be free of health problems and more likely to have a longer life, you would be supporting a breeder who takes care of their animals.
One way to find reputable breeders is to visit a dog show and talk to the owners of show dogs. These breeders often sell some of their dogs as pets and keep some for showing. These dogs are the best quality and from the most humane conditions, and they are more likely to live a happy and healthy life with you.

honestly no you shouldnt. you would be supporting a backyard breeder who intentionally breeds mutts and that's not good. if you buy the dog you are only giving them more money to breed more mutts.

Not sure about this i like to see the pups and other dogs mixing with each other, thats a sign of a good upbringing.
Personally i would stay clear and find another breeder.

Do not buy from this person! These are horrible conditions for dogs to be bred and living in. This person is a backyard breeder puppymill in the making. Go somewhere else. Keep looking at the shelters, you'll find a dog.
Edit: again…this is a puppymill in the making…as you said yourself. Those are not good conditions and you won't likely get a healthy puppy. I suggest going to the shelters…again…or finding a reputable breeder in your area (which will cost a lot more upfront, but should save you in the long run on vet costs).

You visited a back yard breeder. If she has them stacked in cages in the garage, of course she is doing it for the money. If you want a cross bred dog, adopt from a shelter. If you want a pure bred, find the national breed club of the breed you want (just goodle national breed club poodle) and then find a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder will ask you questions about yourself and the way you will kieep the dog so be prepared to be questioned. Buying from a reputable breeder is the on,y way to go, you will get a healthy flea free well socialized puppy.

Unless this "breeder" is giving the puppy away for free.. I would not support her by giving her money. This lady IS a puppy mill.. dirty conditions, many dogs in cages, etc. Chances are the puppy may have health and even socialization issues from poor breeding practices. Even from the sounds of the home conditions, this pup may not be in good health.
No reputable breeder breeds mixed breed dogs anyways. We euthanize thousands of dogs daily, at least 75-85% of them are mixed breeds. Its just unethical to breed mixes.. anyone doing it is only out for a profit, and not producing quality dogs.
Please continue to search thru rescue.. try http://www.petfinder.com and see what is available in your area. If you really want to buy from a breeder, its worth it to research and find a good breeder. Try http://www.akc.org to get a referral thru the breed's parent club.

This sounds like a BYB/beginning puppy mill. Avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, there's nothing overtly illlegal about the setup unless the dogs were in poor conditions, obviously neglected or abused, or otherwise mistreated.
Find a reputable breeder.

Take your time to choose the right puppy or dog! I know seeing a cute, furry companion can initiate the instant "buy now" action, but realize that by purchasing a puppy from a poor breeder or puppy mill, you are only supporting this business. Majority of the animals at shelters are there due to unfortunate circumstances, they are GREAT animals! Keep adoption as an option and know you would be supporting a compassionate organization rather than an inhumane "money making business". There are numerous small, cute puppies &/or dogs at local shelters waiting to find a home. To locate animal shelters in your area, use the internet. You can often browse their websites and view pictures of adoptable animals. Best of luck in your search!
