can u break a chihuahuas tragia if you walk him using a collar instead of a harness?
I had a lady talk me into buying a special harness for my chihuahua. She told me that if I walk him using a leash and collar it could break his tragia if he pulled to hard or lunged at something.
Yes you can damage a Chihuahuas Trachea! Not only that, but it doesn't take much pressure if you pull too hard, to snap their necks! If you pull the wrong way or too hard, it's not that hard to damage their Trachea! I never did and never will use collars to walk my Chihuahuas! I use harnesses! You have better control and it doesn't hurt their Tracheas or their Necks!!

Chi's are pretty small to worry about trachea damage. Usually you worry about this with bigger dogs. I have known a lot of Chi people, and never knew them to have to use a harness for them.

Little dogs have little bones. Yes, you can hurt him. Use the harness.

Do you mean trachea? Yes, toy dogs often have very delicate tracheas and it's better to use a harness than a collar. It doesn't need to be a "special" one — just one that doesn't put pressure on the throat area.

Chihuahuas have tiny bones. I've heard many different people tell me, and have read articles about how if you're walking your Chihuahua with a regular collar, and the dog is a puller, you CAN damage their trachea because it's so small. I prefer using a harness for mine. I have 2 reasons, I know there's no risk of him getting hurt, and it also means that he can't slip out of his collar and run away. (My chi was pretty good at slipping out of collars.)

A neck leash can hurt any dog. I understand that a choke chain has to be used on very rambunctious young and or aggressive dogs but in the hands of the wrong person can cause damage. I would use a chest harness on any dog. When walking my Yorkies, I've had to pick them up off the ground so they aren't attacked by another dog and the harness dosen't hurt them where a collar would. If you sew, you can also make them out of heavy nylon or ripstop. Use velcro to close the harness and a D ring to attach a latch to.

I don't know about breaking the trachea, but many small dogs are prone to tracheal collapse. For tiny breeds like yours, a harness is a much better choice than a collar. You don't really need a special type of harness, just a regular one like this http://www.good-doggie.com/catalog/muddy%20paws%20pink%20roman%20harness.jpg
