Hi, I was out shopping the other day, when I noticed just how many shoppers were purchasing dog food from the supermarket shelves!
Is this the best way to make sure your dog is well looked after, diet and nutrition wise? I don’t think so. I just think we as a society are becoming a little too pressed for time and are giving into supermarket giants and any dog foods to feed our beloved family pets- if we happen to be supermarket shopping, then why not purchase the dog foods available in the same isles we do our family shopping?
I don’t think there are many dog foods available on the supermarket shelves that can claim to be natural and well balanced. This is why I try to provide my dogs (and I have had a few dogs over the years) with my own recipes, sometimes even using raw foods.
This is just something for you to think about before purchasing pre-packaged supermarket dog foods. Did you know that many world famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and many Published Dog Care Experts universally agree that any dog that eats commercial dog food as a ‘normal diet’, is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely. And by the time any symptoms are noticeable it is often too late to prevent an agonizing early and sometimes even slow death.
This is just something for you to ponder next time you are thinking about purchasing supermarket processed dog food. Any way I hope I have not depressed you too much speaking about dogs and death, but at least you know the eventual outcome can be reversed by simply watching what you feed your dog.
Take care for now.
I will be getting back to you shortly with some natural and easy to make Free Dog Food Recipes.

I feed my babies Timberwolf. It is organic, all natural and has herbs.
I've had trouble with my chihuahua and supper market offered products. Dude, have you smelled the food after opening the can? You can't think that I would believe you think they smell good enough for you to even taste. Natural Balance canned she won't eat however the sausage sized Natural Balance Rolls she loves all three types.
PS
My new cat chooses to eat the dogs food three times per week. She has a fish fest with dry kibble offered daily. The chihuahua is eating the cat kibble inbetween with her Iams Kibble. Go figure? Cat is going on 6 months old and chihuahua was nine on August 29th this year, human years.
Well what type of food should we feed them? It's not listed in the article. I have talked to vets who said that the major brands of dog food are okay to feed our pets, just to stay away from the store brands. I don't want to compromise my pet's health, but I have to feed them something unless some recipes are posted ASAP
i feed my two dogs whatever i have left from dinner-they are very happy. they get alot of raw egg yolks too.
they love green beans, carrots, apples and milk bones.
this is what people did before commercial dog food came to be!
Hey Alberta………Have you also tried lettuce and tomatoes? Too much raw salad stuff might give them the "runnits"………but like you, I figure if it's good enough for me……it's fine for my little 4.5 pounder Chi as well——not to mention that she LOVES salad and veggies of all sorts.

i also have a chihuahua and was feeding him chicken jerky made in china and my dog got very sick and i had to feed him boiled rice and chicken for 3 days my vet said to feed him iams dry food and iams snacks and nothig more from china. when the package says to wash hands after handling, don't buy it.
Alberta - Mine loves tomatoes, peaches, watermelon just to name a few unusual things. Her real dog food is Eukanaba which she tolerates.
I had a 2yr old 3lb poodle who was diagnosised with Graves disease. After being on thyroid meds for two years my son moved in with his cat. The poodle started to steal the cat food and all her symptoms wnet away and all her hair grew back in. My mom's 4 lb poodle had all kinds of digestive problems and would chew holes in her hide from itching. I slowly switched them all to cat food and Shayna lived to be 17, Maggie to 16, Giget is now 11, my new chis 1 1/2 are thriving with no G.I. problems, no skin problems and I'm able to enjoy my pets and keep vet costs way down. I use Pet Promise cat food. The ingredients are spectacular.
My chi has had diarrhea for 4 days now. I stopped feeding him his regular food(He will ONLY eat Little Cesar's).I have been giving him white rice or macaroni with a sprinkle of cheese. He is FINALLY getting better. I have tried EVERY FOOD and I mean EVERY food and the only thing he will eat is the little Cesar(besides the occasional rice or mac when he is sick). Whenever I have given my past dogs any "house food" their coats became too dry or too greasy and had ill health. I have stuck to "dog" food only this time and he seems to be the healthiest dog I have had. Any suggestions for what more to give when they get diarrhea??
I HAVE A 2 1/2 YR OLD AND 1 1/2 YR OLD CHI - HAVE ALWAYS FED "PEOPLE" FOOD SINCE MY OLDEST HAS SEIZURES AND I PERSONALLY WANTED TO REMOVE ANY UNIDENTIFIED FOOD SOURCES IN HER DIET. I COOK CHICKEN, TURKEY, LAMB, HAMBURG ETC WITH BROWN RICE, BARLEY, OATMEAL, PASTA AND ASSORTED VEGGIES. WOULD LOVE TO GET SOME RECIPIES FOR HOME COOKED DOG FOOD. BY THE WAY, MY ELDERLY VET AGREES THAT HOME COOKING IS NOT HARMFUL AND SAYS THAT MY BABIES LOOK GREAT AND ARE IN GOOD HEALTH.
I have a chiand she will only eat people food. at 2 years old, she likes to change her meal almost every day. Don't try to give her the same thing 2 days in a row, she will snub her nose at it. I just worry about her shedding. Is it natural to shed alot for a chi?
I had rescued to chihuahua from an abusive home, but he had grown up in the country, and never liked dog food. For almost two years, all he would eat was chicken, rice and hotdogs. I REALIZED this was high in fat, sodium, and excessive protein. The vet recommended some foods, which also did not work. Bam-Bam is now on Purina Dog Chow, and loves it. He has never eaten consistently until now, and actually begs for the food. Is this a good brand, or is this also dangerous for poochy? What exactly causes the "slow death"? Thanks, all you hua lovers!
We have six Chi's and we use primarily Blu Buffalo. It's main ingredients are meat, it has no by products, and my babies do really well on it.
We have six Chi's, and we have gone to Blue Buffalo - main ingredients are meat, and it has no by products. All of my babies like it. I let them have baaby carrots, pieces of apple, celery and tomato. I let them have the occasional sliver of "people" meat and their main treat is freeze dried liver. They are all very healthy and happy.
Great insights and positive remarks. We have FOUR canines and a feline. Our dogs go from one absolutely gentle male pit bull down to (2) crazy mid-sized boston min-pins and one lion-hearted gorgeous male applehead chi (10 lbs). He acts like he's starving to death and gobbles almost anything. I'm going to try (once again) higher quality purer kibbles and see if they'll go for it. I used Bil-Jack (?) one time but they quickly lost interest. Mine, as well love carrots, people food, Sausages and anything they see the others go for. Pitbull Buster is more into being grateful for his bowl; he's ever so gentle and usually dry food & the occassome wet canned foods his psyche into heaven mode. Compared to the others he's the easiest, naturally we love them all. That's it! /tc
I have 4 chic and I feed them little bites and they seen to love it
Re: diahrea:
you can give it a small dose of pepto. Feed white rice, string beans, small amt. of chicken. Chicken noodle soup is good also. My chi had diahrea for a week before getting better.
Purina One Natural Blends (vits and minerals) is great. Small pieces and they like it alot. I mix mine with really expensive dog food that I ordered from Canada. Also fish oil supplements (squeeze on their food) and canned sardines once a week is real good - as well as cottage cheese and peanut butter etc. My chis also love chicken vegies and fruit that I am eating.
Re: Chahuahuas teeth (tarter/plaque buildup)
I found a wonderful product for their teeth/gums. I wish I had known of it years ago as it would have saved me lots of money and they wouldn't have had to have anesthesia and teeth cleaned and pulled!!!
It is called Petzlife Oral Gel (Salmon flavor) and is inexpensive. It really works. I used it for about 8 weeks and most all the tarter/plaque is gone and they were very bad before!! Also it is great for their breath.
Use it daily for tarter buildup and a couple times a week for maintenance. It is for dogs and cats. I tried other products with no success. Petzlife really is fabulous. Look it up on line. That is how I found it.
We all know small breeds usually have bad teeth. This product makes them sparkle.
Why didn't my vet recommend this??????
