Long-haired chihuahua or Jack Russell. ?
My friend's dog had puppies and they are long haired chihuahuas. They have two boys that have not been claimed and said I can have one. What are they like? Are they easy to train? Are they good companions?
At first I was looking into getting a Jack Russell but everyone keeps telling me that they are very hyper.
Should I get the chihuahua or wait for the Jack Russell.
both dogs are very good and friendly though its not that easy to train a chihuahua

I'd get a long haired chihuahua
ive known a few jack russell's they were very hyper, and many of them liked to bite, especially one female i knew. she bit a little boys you know what and he had to be rushed to hospital.

We have a Jack and I won't try and lie and tell you they aren't VERY hyper. That doesn't mean they are bad dogs. It just means they have ALOT more energy to expend than some dogs. Don't avoid a jack russell because they like to run and play. Just keep in mind that they will need a firm hand in training to keep them from being ankle biters(some dogs at least. our jack LOVES people so no biting here)
Chihuahuas aren't the smartest dogs but that doesn't mean they can't be trained. A lot of times I hear about difficulty with potty training. Other than that they are ok dogs (I personally find them annoying with their little yappiness but that is me XD

jack russells are not too hyper, they are territorial
but great dogs, my sister in law has one, she's so sweet and loveable
i am not a fan of chihuahuas, and neither jack russells, i have an American Pitbull Staffordshire, but if i had to chose between the too i would go with a jack russell
my sister in law's jack russell is very loving, loves to sleep under the covers in bed lol
read on jack russell's:

read on chihuahuas:

i personally think the jack russell is cuter lol
if you always wanted a jack russell and are having doubts, just wait til you get a jack russell and maybe just help your friend find her chihuahuas some owners
good luck
ps
every dog can be hyper depending on how much energy they have inside, walk your dog 45 min a day, play with it, fetch, etc and the dog won't be too hyper
biting, every dog can bite too, my sister in law's jack russell has never bit anyone
my american pitbull terrier is always around children and is 2 1/2 years old, hasn't bit anyone either
a dog will grow up to be the way you raise it

If you want the dog right away, get the Chihuahua. Otherwise I would reconsider. Jack Russels can be hyper, depending on how they are raised, but Chihuahuas can be nasty. I would watch out. If you want a friendly social dog, get the Jack Russel. Hope the better dog gets picked!

I have had both a Jack Russell and Chuhuahuas as pets.
My Jack Russell was a lovely dog although she wandered a lot.
Having a Chihauhua is the most amazing experience. Very loyal loving animals but also enjoy going for walks and running around a lot. Another thing you must know about Chihauha's is that they are constantly hungry. Out of the two breeds my Jack Russell was a lot quieter but it really depends on what type of ped you're looking for.
Some people preffer quieter animals. Others preffer energetic animals

Personal Experience
The Jack Russell is so hyper it's airborne half the time. Being with this dog long term (10 years) will try anyone's patience, especially if you're a first time dog owner.
Chihuahua's have their own training problems too, I suggest you join up with some of the dog breed lists on yahoogroups and talk directly with the owners there about the breeds. They won't pull punches.

Jack Russell's are VERY hyper. My friend has one, and it is a BEAST. Most Jack Russell dogs aren't mean, but if they don't have A LOT of exercise, toys, a big yard, and obedience training, they will become an annoying dog.
Long haired chihuahuas are ADORABLE, they aren't as hyper, but they are more fragile. They are soft, and most LOVE to cuddle. They still need to have frequent walks, and toys, and should have obedience training, but they aren't hyper after all of this EVERYDAY, like Jack Russell's are. Most of the time, if they have proper training, they won't chew stuff up, like my friend's Jack Russell Terrier.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both of them! I just think that the Chihuahua would be a better bet.
P.S. Like I said, "I LOVE both of them." My friend is more of a small animal owner, as her family walks him frequently, he still bites. Basing my information on them is not what ALL Jack Russell's do. They do not have proper training for him, that is why he is so mean. Most Russell's aren't like this.

Experience, and research.
I have JRT and he's the calmest dog you could ever want but I think it a little unusual. I met a lady the other day with one and she said that hers isn't hyper at all either. Mine is a couch potato unless I get a toy and ask him to play then he gets the energy. He also does flyball and is good at that, keeps the energy then when he needs to. I've never owned a chihuahua so I can't tell you what the difference is but some Jacks are not too hyper, SOME, lol

Hello,
It's very important to get a dog that will fit YOUR lifestyle. Jack Russels are very hyper, not good around children, shed profusely, and are more prone to cause mischief and destruction. Very cute though.
Chihuahuas on the other hand, are very tiny, easy to hurt, very vocal, and tend to go for the ankles ha ha. Extremely adorable though.
As I said, you need to take a second and think about how much you'll be home, your yard size, proper fencing, $$$$$$, and importantly, what you'd like to do with the dog you get. If you want a lap-dog, a guard-dog, one to run with, etc. All need to be taken into consideration.
If I may, a mini poodle is an excellent dog. They don't shed, great with kids, easy to potty-train, EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT, pretty, laid-back but will play for hours if you want, and also, they are great guard-dogs. They will bark when someone knocks or comes in your home, but are fine once they see you know who they are, and they learn who comes in and out, and etc. GREAT dogs overall.
Good luck, and PLEASE make sure you take your time.
