long haired chihuahua vs short haired chihuahua?

hi!

just wanting to know, in your opinion, whats better a short haired chi or a long haired chi and why.

also, how often do you groom a long haired chi compared to a short haired chi, and how do you do it? i.e bathe your chi every week and brush every two days?

also, will someone tell me if they can, what are the risks of breeding a chihuahua, i was told that because of the chis huge head, sometimes its a still birth or the mother can die!! please answer my q's and if you can a good website!! (youl get a 5star)

thanks in advance!
ok, ive decided, i WONT breed due to too many health risks and i would have to take time off work and be able to know what to do if the birth takes a turn for the worst … BUT I STILL NEED CONVINCING ON WHAT TYPE OF CHI TO GET!!!

Long
Once you have both, you will never go back to the short coat. The temperament difference is unbelievable.

There is always a risk of section in breeding, but Chihuahuas aren't bulldogs. They usually deliver fine. Good prenatal care will prevent many problems or at least foresee them. And using a deer head will help too even though many people prefer the apple heads.

You will be fine with either the short or long haired, that is a matter of personaly preference that you will have to decide on. The short hair Chi, will obviously have less grooming needs, but other than occasional combing, a Long Haired Chi will do just fine!

And breeding ANY dog will be a challenge and have its own risk! Medical emergencies arise during puppy birth and if your not prepared to deal with them you will either have to shell out BIG MONEY to a vet, or sit there and watch your beloved pet die a HORRIBLE death.

short haired all the way… less shedding , mild grooming (once weekly)

long haired… lots of shedding, once a day grooming and sometimes more due to living conditions.

breeding: depending on the size of parents… if its under 5 lbs its going to need a C section because of puppy size. When its close to birthing I would still not trust the dog to be alone. Sometimes the puppies need a little pull.

Short haired cause a long haired one will shed more and it would be a hassle when your trying to shower it and comb its hair.

Hello =) I have to short haired Chihuahua's, so I like short better =). I bathe them once every two weeks, but if they get dirty usually more. You don't really have to brush them, its short enough there is usually no need. On breeding, My chihuahua had a puppy about a year ago, and was completely fine. She only had one puppy, which is usual. I have never heard about them dieing. For a site, try here studentweb.tulane.edu/~ttroscla/chihuahuas/index.htm

There are a lot of risks of breeding your dog!
The mother can die giving birth and the puppies can also die.
If a puppy gets stuck it can die. Or if the mother dies and the puppy lives then you will have to bottle feed a puppy until it is time to wean the puppy. Also pyometra. Costly c-sections. Emergency c-sections! Emergency spay surgery…….ect. ect. ect.

Breeding dogs is really complicated and heartbreaking!

Long-haired or short-haired is a matter of personal preference.

I like long-haired dogs, so obviously my preference would lean towards a long-haired chi over a short haired chi. But get whichever one you like better.

=== ===

Don't bathe a dog more than every 4-6 weeks. Weekly is too often. Over-bathing strips away the natural oils from the dog's skin and coat, and causes them to dry out. Also, always use a shampoo formulated for dogs, never use human shampoo. Human shampoo has a different pH and will dry out and irritate the dog's skin and coat.

If you get a long-haired chi, brush it several times a week.

Yes, you can do all the grooming yourself.

Breeding has lots of risks, from the female needing a c-section to deliver, to losing both the female the puppies.

Here are a couple true stories. And these people were experienced, they KNEW what they were doing and still ended up in disastrous situations.
Bliss the Boxer - http://www.geocities.com/learntobreed/bliss.html
Rebel the Retriever - http://www.geocities.com/learntobreed/rebel.html

There is a lot more to breeding than just sticking two dogs together. The following website is great (although some of the links are broken, the information that is there is very good).

Here's an easy way to evaluate if you should ever CONSIDER breeding your dogs: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/skatekitten2288/Petneuter.jpg

Also, a few more questions (there are many many more, this is just the tip of the iceberg!):
- Is/are the dog(s) AKC or UKC registered [or your country's equivalent] ? (Not Contenential Kennel Club, APRI, or any other of those non-legit/non-reputable/scam registries)
- What is the dog(s) pedigree like?
- Are you planning on showing the dog(s) in conformation to prove that they is a breeding quality specimen?
- Have you had any breeding experience or have you found someone that is a reputable breeder to be your mentor with this?
- Are you willing to keep all the puppies if suitable homes cannot be found? If you find homes and the new owners at some point cannot care for the dog, are you willing to take it back?
- Do you realize how much it will cost? If you do things right, even if you sell the puppies for $1000 each, you will likely still be "in the hole".

ADD:

There is **no such thing** as "apple head" and "deer head" chihuahuas. Those terms are made up by backyard breeders and puppymills to sell their poorly bred dogs.

There is only "chihuahua", and the only correct head is:
"A well rounded "apple dome" skull"

I've had both long and short coat (they are wandering around my feet right now!) There is no difference in temperment or personality. How silly- hair length has nothing to do with that and a chihuahua is a chihuahua with all their wonderful little "quirks". I've had many, many dogs over many years, used to breed toy poodles, which were lovely little dogs, but nothing beats a chi for personality. I'd never go back to anything else. Easy to care for- either length. I rarely brush them, the long coats a bit now and then. Get a glove type with the "nubbies" and "pet" your dog when you watch TV or something when it's shedding and that's about it. Bathe only when needed- it dries them out if done too often. Choose which look you like- that's how to decide. I live in a cold winter climate with lots of snow, etc. Booties for the bitter days and ofcourse coats, but even my short coats do just fine- infact that's the best time to potty train- they don't go out and play and forget what they're there for!
