My parents and I are thinking of getting a chihuahua but I'm debating over a short-haired one or a long-haired one, and like I said before, we live in a desert-like environment.
Chihuahuas are heat seekers. I have both the long and short haired variety. I also live in what could be considered desert conditions. Of course, chis are indoor dogs who don't tolerate cold well at all, but with plenty of water and someplace cool to lay when they've had enough heat (mine like laying next to the toilet on the cool tile in the bathroom!) they're ideal for someplace that would be a little too warm for other dogs.
Incidentally, my 2 short hairs shed worse than my long haired!
They are sweet, happy little dogs. I think you'll be pleased with your choice!

Either would be fine. They are inside dogs and the temp inside will be fine. They are also cold natured,so it will work.

I live in Arizona and my long hair was originally from WA but LOVES the AZ climate! I get him little shoes for our short outside “summer” walks on the sidewalk (where grass isn’t available) so he doesn’t burn the bottom of his pads, but he loves the weather at night in the summer! The weather doesn’t get too cold in the winter, either, so it’s just right for him with his natural “coat.” They do seek out sunny spots though, so just be aware of their whereabouts if you let them wander oustide in the yard in the summer, they’re not the best at regulating how much tanning the can do! He loves to sit in front of the fan with his long ear fur blowing, it’s pretty funny! As far as shedding, I’d say he’s average. I’m a clean freak, and I haven’t noticed a fur/shedding problem at all in 3 years. Generally, as long as you introduce your dog to the extreme elements slowly, they’re great at acclimating to their environment.
