Advice on my "teacup" Chihuahua?

Mac is my Chihuahua puppy who we adopted just a few days ago. He is vary small in size. What are the best things I can do as an owner of this puppy to assure his best health ? He was diagnosed with a URI last night, the vets wanted to attach him to intravenous fluids and I thought that was too extreme. I think it's best to up his immune system, and we accepted the antibiotics, he is now taking Clavamox and Neomycin morning and night.

Any thing else I should do to take best care of him? He is still warming up to us, he started playing yesterday and mostly likes to follow me around on the floor and cuddle up in my lap. He loves his Nutri-Cal more than anything else to eat.

Okay please give me advice on what to do for him. He is the sweetest thing ever. He needs a lot of baby love!

IV fluids are extreme? You realize you go to a human ER and they will stick an IV in just about anyone to prevent dehydration? It is just fluids, I think antibiotics will do a whole lot more as far as side effects (though the benefit WAY outweigh the risks in almost all situations)

If he was marketed as "teacup" I wouldn't trust his immune system. The vet knows best, so while it is good to question why did you decide not to listen? Ask questions, but don't think the immune system is the best bet because once the dog is already sick the immune system is obviously not in the best shape. I would seriously reconsider getting him the fluids OR getting a second opinion.

I think that its in your best interest to listen to your vet. Really, he/she is the only person that can understand the puppy's healthy/body the best and no one should doubt that, not even the owner- unless you dont trust your vet, in which case I would advise you to switch vets. Nutri-cal is best to make sure he doesnt become hypoglycemic. Honey also works, and teacups love yogurt too!! Really just make sure Mac is comfortable at all times- but I would take the advice of your vet regarding the URI.

Thats unfortunate that your dog is sick at such a young age :( Just make sure the first sign of illness he gets straight back to the vet! Thats the thing with so called "Teacup" dogs, they always have health problems :( Have a read of this :)

no such thing as a teacup - just another name for poorly bred runt. that's also the thing with these dogs, my friend's lil bro went out to buy one without saying anything - turns out the pup was really sick and ended up in the emergency vet. Best of luck - but this pup will run up the bill.

If I were you, honestly if it's from a breeder, and the puppy were still on the warranty I'd trade it in for a healthier one. I know, it's so hard to part from a puppy you've already fallen in love with, but I think you'd rather have a healthy pup than a dead one.

And I'd take the advice of the vet– they know what they're doing.

For the future, don't buy a 'teacup' puppy. It's inevitable that the 'teacup' pup will be sickly, and I am not surprised that he is.

Good luck, though, and I hope your puppy pulls through!

Chihuahuas are the best dogs ever!! I would have done the same thing as you about wanting to wait on the I.V.'s Too bad he got sick right after you got him. Glad you are using the nutrical. He still needs to eat tho and make sure he is getting some water as well or he will get dehydrated. Chihuahuas need lots of attention and lots of love and sounds like you are taking good care of ji, If he won't eat the dry puppy food, give him some canned puppy food for a few days until he is feeling better.
