I live in cali.but im taking my teacup chihuahua to pa,its a 3 day drive.any tips? ?

I'll be driving with my husband,so there's two of us in the car with him. Hes still a puppy, about 4 months old.

Crate him with his bed. Offer water all the time. Don't feed him while traveling wait to do that when you will be stopped for more than an hour. He could get car sick and throw it up. Make frequent stops for him to use the bathroom he is a puppy so it would be more frequent than if he was an adult. Make sure that you have his papers some states require them before they will let him come in that state.

remember to stop often to take your puppy out to the bathroom
bring plenty of food for the trip and make sure it has lots of water
when you finally get to PA, take it for a walk

You might want to stop by the vets office on the way out to see if they will write you a script for anti nausea-for car sickness…
With the puppy being so young it is very likely that it is going to get sick from being in the car for that long..
Stop for frequent potty breaks..and food and water.

No such thing as "teacup" chihuahua.

Take food, water and treats.

If hes car sick wrap him up for security.
If not just make sure to walk him regularly.
And make sure you keep him on the same schedule eating and drinking wise as he has been.

any dog, no matter how small or big, should always be restrained while traveling. A sudden stop can send your pup flying causing injury to the dog and to you!
A crate would be the best for your pup since it's so small, add a few toys and treats, and he should be good to go!

well since the puppy is so young he wont really realize it. Make sure you let him go to the bathroom and also make sure he still drinks his water and eats his food. As long as he is close by he should be fine!!

Good luck and have fun!!

He'll be ok, I leave Cali in a week, we are taking a truck with a back seat but what am I taking? A rabbit, a guinea pig, and a cat, I don't thnk you have anything to be worried about, but me on the other hand I'm gonna have some issues drivin from Cali to Ohio! Just let him go potty once in awhile and don't leave him in the car by himself for to long!

A Teacup will be fine. Be sure to wrap bubble wrap around it though. You wouldn't want it to break!

Bring enough food and water. Don't keep him locked a cage in the back seat. Have him sit on your lap. Stop every so often
(every 3 hours or so) at rest stops with designated dog areas. Take him for a good walk and let him go to the bathroom. Give him lot's of attention along the way!

i would get a small crate to put him in. also make frequent potty stops, and if you do not know if he gets car sick you may ask your vet for the dosage for DRAMAMINE for car sickness. well i hope it goes well for ya'll!

Take him for a long walk before the drive so he's tired and sleeps in the car. Before the trip, make sure he's desensitized to riding in a car, meaning you need to take him on frequent car rides, making them gradually longer. For the trip, a crate would be a good idea. It'll make him feel more secure and it's safer for him and for you for him to be contained. If you're leaving in the morning, buy some Kong toys and stuff them with his breakfast kibble, along with a few treats and some peanut butter to make it last longer. These will keep him entertained for a while - do this with his dinner too.

Keep in mind that you'll have to be stopping every three-four hours to let him out. Make sure you offer him plenty of water. Also exercise him a little - take him for a walk, run with him, or play a little fetch. Car rides can be boring for an energetic puppy!

Of course, you'll need to plan ahead and find pet-friendly hotels to stay in during the trip. Have fun!

Is he chipped? If not, get that done just in case. Put a leash and collar on him at all times and provide a small crate that can be fitted in the backseat and kept in place by one of the seatbelts. Plan to stop once every one or two hours for "potty breaks" and offer water at that time too. Don't let him feed heavily, lite snacking is better because the pup will be less likely to get motion sickness that way. You are also traveling during cold weather, be sure to keep a sweater or coat handy for him.

Ok read this first :)

Then as the others have said, I would take your dog to the vet to get travel sickness tablets :)

Make sure your dog gets pleanty of water and make sure you stop every hour and a half or so to take him to the toilet, give him a bed to sleep in and some toys and he should be fine.

Pack it carefully in bubblewrap and newspaper and put it someplace safe in the car. You don't want it to break.

Oh wait…you did say you were bringing a "teacup" right? Or did you mean a chihuahua, as in the dog? There is no such thing as a teacup dog.

I've driven from New York City to St. Louis, MO several times with my golden retriever. The highway rest stops in PA, OH, and IL usually have areas marked for dog walking but you'll need to bring some poop bags for clean up.

I prefer Red Roof Inns and Holiday Inn Express as my places to stay that are dog friendly. Motel 8 is dog friendly too but its my last resort type of place.

If your dog gets carsick, skip feeding breakfast and wait until the car ride is over for the day. Although, I know that it is not as easy to skip meals when it comes to a puppy. Children's Benadryl Syrup can ease car sickness and it'll make him/her sleepy. Ask your vet for the appropriate dosing. Good luck!

Hopefully I am not responding too late–
Don't worry too much about the drive. I take my Chi's with me back and forth to TX from OK; it is about a 6 hour drive for us. They do wonderfully, but, of course, they go on car rides all of the time. Bye Bye is one of their favorite words and event.

It is a good idea to have them in a crate, for safety reasons. However, they can sit comfortably on a blanket, or dog bed in the back seat, or your lap. You do need to be extra cautious driving, which I'm sure you will be. Some may not agree with this viewpoint, but I do not agree with constraining or caging animals. A 3 day drive is a lot of hours in a car, especially if you're in a small crate. It is quite uncomfortable to stay in a crate for so many hours, and it is unhealthy. If you have room it would be good to purchase a crate the size of 1 - 1 1/2 car seats. That way it gives your little guy room so he does not feel so confined. It will also provide safety, just in case.

I suggest only feeding 2 times a day, small amounts, and offer water, in small amounts, several times a day during the car drive. I use the cap of a water bottle for mine. It is just enough for them (1 capful per dog) if offered every 2 hours. Bathroom breaks are very necessary. When you stop for anything, food, gas, bathroom, etc., always walk him around in a grassy area. This will help stimulate circulation and give him the opportunity to use the bathroom if needed. I hope he is current on vaccinations, if not, do so before leaving. Every grassy area, whether clean looking or not, can possibly hold millions of germs, and deadly viruses that are dangerous to our dogs.

I have never had a problem with car sickness with any of my Chihuahua's. With other breeds I know it can be a problem, but I have not found this to be true with Chihuahua's. I even take my puppies, when I have some, on car rides. It is a great experience for them.

I hope this helps.
